Xeriscape

Xeriscapes are landscapes that make use of xerophytes xeri (greek word for dry) phyte is a plant with certain characteristics.

We have been designing building and to some degree experimenting with xeriscapes since 1999. We've received awards from the ALCC and re-wilded countless yards.

Back then xeriscaping was all about saving water.

Now we can see that xeriscapes when built with intention…..

  • Can help preserve and clean riparian areas by limiting non point source pollution and filtering runoff.

  • They control erosion during floods better than monoculture sods.

  • Provide resilient landscapes during drought.

  • Provide forage for pollinators.

  • Our customers really love this benefit once established they require less maintenance because the closer our landscapes emulate nature the easier they are to upkeep. This means more time in the hammock and it would seem most Coloradons appreciate that.

We have ran into some different problems through the years of installing xeriscapes.

Bully Plants

These plants tend to be introduced plants from other continents that have little regard for their neighbors. Certain plants can be hard to control as they take over the soil crushing biodiversity and sometimes even moving into neighbors yards or open spaces. We design communities of plants that get along with each other while thriving in their micro climates.

Plants with different water needs

In any xeriscape you will have plants with different water needs. Even in monoculture xeriscapes plants may have different sun exposure or if plants die the new plants will need more water to establish. We came up with a sensible way to provide multiple automated drip stations to establish then maintain our xeriscapes (link to picture and caption).

Xeriscapes can be expensive

We try to make this work accessible to as many as possible. Changing from monoculture water and nutrient intensive landscapes can be a lot of work and money. We have been working hard to figure out how to make these landscapes more affordable for everyone. (Seeding xeriscapes plant list and pictures link)

Xeriscapes can be difficult to maintain in the first few years

The first few years you have baby plants trying to compete with existing weeds and everything that blow in on the wind. We sometimes employee sheet mulch (link) to control existing weeds to give the new plants less competition while they are establishing. We also utilize succession planting strategies to help control the soil while larger plants slowly establish.

We either provide maintenance for our clients or provide coaching so they can be successful. We also spend time using our experience to set reasonable expectations so our customers don't bite off more than they can chew when designing their xeriscapes.

We install Xeriscapes not Zeroscapes

We have found that plants provide long term solutions controlling the soil, minimizing erosion, and providing long term timeless beauty. Zeroscapes like fabric and rocks degrade over time filling up with soil and weeds. Fabric and rocks provides little protection in the face of erosion. If there is any grade the rocks roll down hill leaving exposed fabric the calling card of a bad short term idea
